Most people are very content with their pool but can enhance their pool experience by adding one of the many types of swimming pool heaters. This will allow you to swim into the fall and maybe even the winter, depending on the climate where you live.
There is a variety of heaters to choose from and we'll discuss a few of them here. The 3 main heaters are solar, gas and electric and all have their advantages. Some of the deciding factors are the initial cost, the cost to operate and what temperature range it can keep the water. Solar heaters can be the right choice for some due to the cost to operate is so low. You only need to pay for whatever electricity it takes to run the pump. It can maintain the water at about 80 - 85 degrees. One thing to consider is the size needed for the solar panels and also where are they going to be located. Generally, the solar panel should be equal to 50% - 100% of the pools surface and mounted on a roof slope.
Electric heaters such as heat pumps are the most popular choice because they can keep the pool water at a higher temperature (80 - 90 degrees) for less and can be mounted right next to the pump and don't take up much room. They are the most expensive to install but are cheaper to operate than a gas heater.
A gas heater will cost you a lot less to purchase and install but it's not very efficient so the cost to operate is higher. You'll want to use it only on the colder days. The money you save in the beginning will be thrown out the window later. It also is usually mounted right next to the pump and filter so it is not going to take up much room.
No matter which of the swimming pool heaters you end up with, you will appreciate the warm, relaxing water as summer turns to fall and the outside temps begin to fall. If you haven't already, you will definitely want to include the purchase of a thermal pool cover if you decide to heat your pool. The cover will help to keep the heat in the water and also lower the cost of operating the heater. With the money you save by using the cover, you can purchase some other accessory for your backyard pool paradise!
