Swimming pool filters are one of the components involved with keeping your pool water clear and clean. It doesn't matter if you have an above ground pool or an inground pool, you'll need a filter. This is one of the items you should make sure is of high quality and is large enough to perform it's function adequately. You also want to be able to easily remove the filtration system, whether it is sand, a filter cartridge or DE.
Diatomaceous earth or DE is a type of material used in pool filter systems. It is mined in places like Libya, Northern Ireland and Denmark. It is basically all natural, being fossilized water plants (diatoms) that have been ground up into powder and partially melted to form crystalline silica. This type of filtration system provides exceptional water clarity. One caution however, is to be sure and wear gloves and a dust mask whenever you are handling it, because it can cause respiratory problems
A cartridge filter system is most likely the easiest of all the swimming pool filters to maintain and keep clean. Some popular brands are Hayward, Sta Rite and Pentair. You will have to rinse the cartridges once or twice a year so be sure the system you buy has easy access. Most of the tanks these days are made from non-corrosive materials like polymer and have 5 to 10 year warranties.
If you choose a sand filter system, it will provide you with years of service before you will need to completely change the sand. It is low maintenance but you will have to backwash every once in a while. It could be a hassle when it's time to change the sand so keep that in mind. Once you decide it's time to replace the sand, why not try a new product called Zeobest which is made from 100% natural minerals. It has the ability to filter particles about 10 times smaller than sand and for every 2 pounds of sand, you'll only need 1 pound of Zeobest.
All of the above swimming pool filters will do an adequate job for you and are available for both above ground and inground pools. The final choice is up to you and you can purchase these at your local pool store or shop online for the best price and selection. Remember that you want to have years of trouble free service so do your research and know what you want before you buy. If you just go out and buy the cheapest you can find, you might regret it later!
